When it comes to men and women, who should pay what?

Okay,

If you are with a guy, either married or living together, how should the bills be split? Are couples still doing things the old-fashioned way (he pays rent, car notes, major bills); she may buy clothes, groceries, setting money aside for emergencies. What if she makes more money than he does? Does that automatically mean it's her job to foot the majority of the bills? What if both folks want new cars? Do you pay your own car insurance and car notes? Help a sista out...Times is hard. Gas is high. And a loaf of bread don't cost what it used to. LOL.

The best thing to do is to pool your resources together. Pay all bills, each person takes an allowance and put some money in a bank account to save and in another for emergencies. Times are too tough and you have to work as a team if you are going to accomplish things. In relationships it is not about me but about us. If you don't do it this way one person may make more money and feel that he or she has the most say about things...but if you establish yourself as a couple that means sharing and supporting each other. Fiances and arguing over money are one of the main reasons that folks get divorced.

I agree with Rose. You have to pool your resources together. It can't all be about "me, myself, and I", but unselfishness has to be the rule of the day...

The main reason I got divorced was because of finances. I made more money than my ex-husband, and ended up handling the finances, which left me in a deep hole, taking years to recover... But it wasn't like that in the beginning when he and I were making similar salaries... We pooled our money. Looks like consistency is key...

I do think, however, that the days of June and Ward Cleaver are LONG, long gone! Us ladies have to get out there now and make it do what it do! (LOL)

Hi Cyd,

I believe it should be worked out equally or the way each individual couple agrees. Some women don't mind paying the bills if she's making most of the money. It goes for some men too. The problem today is that there are so many men not working that it turns out to be such a struggle for not only the women in the relationship but the relationship itself. Why any woman would put up with a man who is not working is beyond me. If you lost your job fine but if you never work to get another one what sense does that make? A woman can work and pay her own bills by herself. She doesn't need a man to move into HER house drive HER car and expect to spend HER money. No something is wrong with that picture but unfortunately it is the picture of today. I changed my blog design. It's like yours now. I hope you like it. Visit more often. I miss your comments.

I agree with Rose. In this day and age it's best to pay things together. It helps both of you be able to save and get the things that you both want down the road. Great post.

I agree with the other ladies about pooling the resources, but for me I'd also have my own account for buying my heart's little desires. I find that this is what many of my friends do.
